Motor Fault Causes and Infrared Thermal Imaging Solutions

There are many reasons for the failure of the motor, the common ones are as follows:

 

1. Electrical wiring (Electrical junction box housing)

Connection terminal overheating caused by loose connection, oxidative corrosion of connection terminals, over-tight connection, etc

Cable overheating caused by unbalanced voltage or overload

 

2. Motor enclosure temperature distribution

The temperature of inner core and winding is too high due to aging of insulation layer or damage of short circuit

Insufficient air flow leads to heat dissipation failure and the overall temperature of the housing is too high

 

It can be seen that the main phenomenon of motor failure is generally temperature rise. The motor is the backbone of industry. It is estimated that in the United States alone, there are 40 million motors running in industry, and these motors consume 70% of the electricity consumed by the whole industry, which is enough to illustrate the importance of electric motors. The use of infrared thermal camera can quickly and accurately measure the motor temperature, and fault point judgment, motor fault can be early warning and timely maintenance and repair, reduce economic losses. The infrared temperature measurement of the motor can be captured in the form of image by using infrared thermal camera.

 

Through infrared thermal imaging detection, it can be found that the surface temperature of the entire stator of the motor is very high, while the temperature at both ends of the motor stator is low and the temperature in the middle is high. Such abnormalities may be caused by overload or aging of insulation materials. It is not caused by heat dissipation abnormality. Local heating on the stator surface may be caused by damage to the local iron core, short circuit between iron chips and short circuit between turns. Taking the motor and water pump in thermal power plant as an example, overheating of the motor or water pump bearing will directly lead to equipment failure, resulting in sudden interruption of the production line.

 

 

For the site of power plant, there are many bearings with smaller dimensions, such as conveyor belt bearings, and low running speed; Some conveyor belts are high in height, making direct contact with bearings difficult. At this point, the use of infrared thermal imager non-contact detection, is a good alternative method, timely detection of bearing overheating fault, to ensure normal production.
